Who is responsible for the Transatlantic Slave Trade that brought millions of free Africans to America and enslaved them? Criticism of Arabs and Islam by Black orientalists like Molefi Kete Asante, Henry Louis Gates, Chancellor Williams, and others have led many to the impression that Muslims are responsible for slavery in America. Is this a fair, historical depiction? Shaykh Muhammad Mendes participated in a special program entitled “Timbucktu to Antebellum” at the United Muslim Masjid in Philadelphia. In responding to the question about Arab/Muslim involvement in the Transatlantic Slave Trade, Shaykh Muhammad called upon Sidi Rasul Miller, a graduate student of Africana Studies and History at the University of Pennsylvania to also provide some insight into the question. His response made for a fascinating discourse.
