Who is responsible for the Transatlantic Slave Trade that brought millions of free Africans to America and enslaved them? Criticism of Arabs and Islam by Black orientalists like Molefi Kete Asante, Henry Louis Gates, Chancellor Williams, and others have led many to the impression that Muslims are responsible for slavery in America. Is this a fair, historical depiction? Shaykh Muhammad Mendes participated in a special program entitled “Timbucktu to Antebellum” at the United Muslim Masjid in Philadelphia. In responding to the question about Arab/Muslim involvement in the Transatlantic Slave Trade, Shaykh Muhammad called upon Dr.  Rasul Miller, a specialist of Africana Studies and History to also provide some insight into the question. Dr. Rasul Miller

Dr. Rasul Miller has a PhD in the fields of History and Africana Studies at the University of Pennsylvania. He has taught courses in African and African American history at the University of Pennsylvania and Drexel University. He received his BA in Economics and African and African American Studies at Duke University. His research interests include Muslim movements in 20th century America and their relationship to Black internationalist thought and West African intellectual history.
